My parents were mostly good about keeping us alive and involved in things and going on a few of the obligatory family vacations white lower middle class families go on – camping, visits to a friend’s lake house, road trips to visit family they barely wanted to be around. But in my family there was zero introduction to the world as someone who would live an independent life, have dreams, need to plan a life or grow in maturity.

When people tell me what I went through made me who I am today, I call bullshit. I’m not going to say the pain was worth it because it did nothing but stifle me. I would have preferred a path of meeting and being mentored by strong women because my life would have been so much more of service to this world. I would have preferred to notice the red flags and skip the abusive marriage. I would have preferred all of those things leading me to learning about life before settling for an abusive man. I choose that now.
